The Challenge

I started the process by journey mapping and taking stock of existing features

When I joined HiLink full-time in January 2023, I was entrusted with an exciting and challenging responsibility: leading and owning the API development of a new product offshoot called VCaaS (Virtual Classroom as a Service). This API enabled institutions and businesses to integrate our virtual classroom capabilities into their management systems and websites. When I stepped in, the product had an MVP built by external engineering contractors, but it suffered from poor UX and lacked a well-structured design. Despite these challenges, one potential client had already integrated the API, presenting the unique task of improving its functionality without breaking compatibility. My background in software programming made me the ideal candidate to navigate this complexity.

The Process

To address the challenges with VCaaS, I researched competitor products and analyzed popular APIs to gather design guidelines and best practices. I also conducted user interviews to collect feedback from our early adopters, gaining insights into their pain points and needs. Using this data, I produced Product Requirement Documents (PRDs) and developed a list of essential features, which I prioritized using the RICE framework. I then presented my vision to the C-suite and VC advisors, effectively gaining their buy-in. Once the features were prioritized, I translated them into user stories, grooming them with engineers to ensure alignment and feasibility. I also took ownership of updating and maintaining client-facing API documentation, providing clarity and usability. Throughout the process, I focused on releasing backward-compatible features, preserving the experience of existing clients while enhancing the product for future users.

The Outcome

Clients that integrated using the VCaaS API during my time at HiLink

In just over a year, my role at HiLink allowed me to grow both technically and professionally. I deepened my technical expertise, enjoying the opportunity to apply my software programming education while leveraging my business acumen to drive impactful decisions on a lean team. I gained valuable experience in creating thorough documentation and effectively communicating with clients and external stakeholders, ensuring alignment and transparency. Additionally, owning the product roadmap gave me the chance to make significant, traceable contributions to the company’s growth, reinforcing the importance of clear strategy and cross-functional collaboration.
